Ultimately, from Proto-Slavic *županъ, from *župa (“area, district”), via:
- Austrian German Suppan, an occupational surname for an administrator in a Slavic-speaking region.
- Germanized form of Župan and Zupan; from Lower Sorbian župan, Upper Sorbian župan, Serbo-Croatian župan, Slovene župan and Slovene zupan.
