Etymology 1

Probably from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gjaupāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *gewp-eh₂, from *gewp-, an extension of *gew-. Compare Proto-Germanic *kubô (“hut, cove”), Ancient Greek γῡ́πη (gū́pē, “den, cavity”).

Etymology 2

Not entirely clear. Has been compared with Old English ġēap (“broad, spacious”), Lithuanian gaubti (“to cover”).
