Etymology
Two proposed etymologies:
- A reduplication of Hokkien 宋 (sòng), in relation to the Song dynasty.[1]
- From sungsong, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *suŋsuŋ (“go against wind or current”). The attribution to China is presumably connected with sailing problems in reaching mainland China from the Philippines, according to Blust and Trussel (2010).[2]
Pronunciation
- (Standard Tagalog) IPA(key): /suŋˈsoŋ/ [sʊnˈsoŋ]
