Compare with Idoma onya, Ebira anya (woman), further etymology is unclear. The root does not resemble Proto-Yoruboid terms for "woman," see *ɔ́-bɪ̃̀rɪ̃ (female). Perhaps related to Nupe èyà (friend). May come from the same root as *ɛ́-ɲã̀ (breast)
