Borrowed from Late Latin margarita, modified by folk-etymological from *mari (“sea”) + *greutō (“sand, dust”). Parallel borrowing with Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐍂𐌹𐌺𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍄𐌿𐍃 (marikreitus, “pearl”).
