From *hur(ʀ)n- (“hornet”) + *-ut (animal suffix) + *-u, from Proto-Germanic *hurzô ~ *hurzniz (“hornet”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱérh₂s-ō ~ *ḱr̥h₂s-nés (“hornet”), from *ḱerh₂- (“head, horn”) + *-s- + *-ō. Cognate with Proto-Balto-Slavic *śirˀšō (“hornet”), Latin crābrō (“hornet”).
