Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *staiˀnā́ˀ. Cognate with Proto-West Germanic *stain (“stone”), Ancient Greek στῖον (stîon, “pebble”) and Sanskrit स्त्यायते (styāyate, “hardens, solidifies”).
