Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *salpás, probably from an extension of Proto-Indo-European *sel- (“to flow, to slide, to thrust”). Cognate with Lithuanian sal̃pas (“river cove, creek, backwater”), salpà (“flood-land, river cove, creek, backwater”). Possibly more distantly akin to Old Prussian salus (“downpour”).
