Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ḱléwt, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (to listen to). In Slavic, the root vowel was retracted to *-o- before heterosyllabic *-w- (as in *novъ < Pre-Slavic *néwos).
