From Proto-Balto-Slavic *skord-, from Proto-Indo-European *skordʰ-eh₂. Cognate with Latvian skā̀rdît (to pound, crush), Lithuanian skardýti (to dig up, crush), Old Prussian scurdis (dibstone, mattock).
