From earlier *pęnęgъ, borrowed from either Gothic *𐍀𐌹𐌽𐌽𐌹𐌲𐌲𐍃 (*pinniggs),[1] or i-umlaut inflected late Proto-West Germanic *penning, from earlier *panning,[2] both from Proto-Germanic *panningaz (coin, penny).
