From Proto-Balto-Slavic *lugtei, from Proto-Indo-European *lugʰ-yé-ti, ye-present of *lewgʰ- (to lie, to tell falsehood).

Cognate with Lithuanian lūgóti (to request, bet), Latvian lùgt (to request, invite).
