Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kljaukjas, from Proto-Indo-European *klewk-yo-s, from *kle(h₂)uk-, an extended form of *(s)kleh₂w- (“hook, key, peg”). Equivalent to *kľuti (“to peck, to prickle”) + *-čь. Cognate with Latin clāvis (“key”).
