Etymology
By surface analysis, *dojь + *-iti, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-. Cognate with Latvian dêt (“to suck”), Sanskrit धयति (dháyati, “to suck”), Latin fellō (“to suck”), Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌳𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (daddjan, “to breastfeed”).
