From Proto-Balto-Slavic *debelas, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeb-e-lo-s, from *dʰeb- (fat, heavy, thick); about the suffix, compare *tęželъ and *veselъ. Cognate with Latvian depsis (small, fat boy), Old Prussian debīkan, debica (big), Proto-Germanic *dapraz.
