From imperative form of *mьstiti (“take vengeance, revenge, avenge”) + *ujь (“uncle on mother's side”), from Proto-Indo-European *mith₂-ti-, *h₂ewh₂-i-o- (> Proto-Balto-Slavic *auʔ(i)o-).
