Etymology

Possibly calque of Iranian (cp. Old Median Bagadāta- (“god-given, given by god”) ) or calque of Ancient Greek Θεόδοτος (Theódotos, literally “given by God”) or Ancient Greek Θεόδωρος (Theódōros, “Theodore”, literally “gift of God”). Morphologically from *bogъ (“god”) +‎ *danъ (“given”), the passive participle of *dati (“to give”).
