From earlier *kuńm- < *końm- < *koľm-, from Proto-Uralic *kolme. Cognates include Proto-Finnic *kolmi and Proto-Samic *kolmë.

The earlier *koľm- > *kojm- is attested in the ordinal number *kojmäd (third).
