Sometimes connected with Ulch, Nanai тарга (targa, beaver), which themselves may be compared with Nivkh тʼаӻр (tʼaꜧ̇r, chipmunk).

Perhaps separable into *tarba- + *-gan, with the second element recurring in other animal names.
