From Proto-Mongolic *tarbagan, compare Mongghul tarbugha. Sometimes connected with Ulch, Nanai тарга (targa, “beaver”), which themselves may be compared with Nivkh тʼаӻр (tʼaꜧ̇r, “chipmunk”).
