From Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰéwsos, from *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰéwseti (to hear, listen), from *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰew- (to perceive); probably cognate with Proto-Germanic *gaumō (heed, attention).[1]
