Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰéwsos, from *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰéwseti (“to hear, listen”), from *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰew- (“to perceive”); probably cognate with Proto-Germanic *gaumō (“heed, attention”).[1]
