Uncertain: possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰér-mō ~ *bʰr̥-mnés,[1][2] from *bʰer- (to boil) (compare with Latin fermentum (fermentation; yeast)), or perhaps from *gʷʰér-mō ~ *gʷʰr̥-mnés,[3] from *gʷʰer- (warm, hot).
