Proto-Germanic
Alternative forms
Etymology
Uncertain; perhaps from a pre-Indo-European substrate word.[1] Otherwise, outside of Germanic, it may be related to Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (“to shine, glisten”) or to Sanskrit बभस्ति (babhasti, “to chew, eat”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰes-.[2] However, also compare Latin baca (“berry”),[3] or fascis (“bundle”).[1]
