Proto-Germanic
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₂oyd-sth₂-o-, from the root *h₂eyd- (“to swell”) (see *aitaz, *aitrą) with a suffixed root *-sth₂-, a formation common also to Balto-Slavic: Lithuanian ìnkstas (“testicle, kidney”), Old Church Slavonic исто (isto, “testicle, (pl.) kidneys, guts”). Compare also Albanian eshke, veshkë (“kidney”).[1]
