Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Borrowed from either early Proto-Germanic *stūraz (whence German stur, Dutch stoer)[1] or from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stʰuHrás (compare Sanskrit स्थूर (sthūrá, “big, bulky, thick”)), in either case ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂uh₂rós.
Not directly related with the more widespread Germanic root *stōraz (whence e.g. Swedish stor), which has *ō and not *ū as the root vowel.[1]
