From Proto-Finno-Permic *porćas, borrowed from Proto-Indo-European *pórḱos, through either Proto-Balto-Slavic *párśas or Proto-Iranian *párcas. *o is presumed to continue PIE *o by some, but not all scholars.

Cognates include Proto-Permic *pɔrś.
