Etymology

From Proto-Celtic *kattā, of non-Indo-European origin and traditionally thought to be from an Afroasiatic language, such as Nubian *kadīs (“cat”). Because of clear parallels in Latin cattus and Proto-Germanic *kattuz, the language family that the word first entered is unclear.
