Possibly from Proto-Celtic *wertos, from Proto-Indo-European *wert-o-s, for Proto-Indo-European *wert- (to turn), or perhaps borrowed from Germanic, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *werþą (worth, value) of the same root.[1]
