Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *nan(n)-eh₂- (“mother”), possibly a Lallwort. Closely related to Messapic ana, cognate to Ancient Greek νάννη (nánnē, “aunt, mother”), Welsh nain (“grandmother”), Sanskrit नना (nanā́, “mother”), Persian ننه (nane, “mother, grandmother”), Ukrainian неня (nenja, “mother”).
