Etymology

From Proto-Iranian *wrinǰiš[1] (compare Sogdian ܒܪܝܢܢܨ (βrync /⁠βrinč⁠/), Mazanderani وینج (vinj)), unexplained nasalized variant of *wriHǰíš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wriHǰʰíš, whence Sanskrit व्रीहि (vrīhí, “rice”). Further cognate with Sogdian 𐽀𐼷𐼼𐼸 (rysk /⁠rise⁠/), Pashto وريژې pl (wriže), Khotanese [script needed] (rrīysu), Yagnobi rēžōna, Zazaki riz, Northern Kurdish riz, Ormuri (rēzan), Talysh (berz), Gilaki (bəj), Kermanic beray. Possibly related to Proto-Dravidian *wariñci (“rice”).
