Etymology

Possibly from a Balkan substrate. Usually assumed to be connected with Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Lithuanian tur̃gus, Latvian tirgus, Swedish torg (market, marketplace). Compare Romanian târg (market), Albanian treg (market). This group is considered to be cognate with the Italian city name of Trieste, Latin Tergeste[1].
