Etymology
Borrowed from Albanian Pogradec, probably from an Eastern South Slavic language. See Macedonian Подградец (Podgradec), an old name of the city, from под (pod, “under, below”) + град (grad, “city, town”) + -ец (-ec), which refers to the ancient Illyrian settlement located on a hill northwest of the city.
