A made-up name from the early 20th century, when the town became established as a united populated area. Compound of Orkdal + anger (compare to Hardanger). The area around the harbour was previous known as Feskøra (oral) or Orkedalsøyri (Landsmål), although it had no clear borders and no clear center.
