From Middle High German nixe, from Old High German nicchessa, feminine form of nichus, nihhus (“water-spirit”), from Proto-Germanic *nikwus, *nikwis, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *neygʷ- (“to wash”). More at nix, nicker.
