Middegaal
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as middegael in 1387. Compound of Middle Dutch midde (“middle, mid-”) and a second element of unknown etymology. Proposed etymologies for the second element include a derivation from a compound of either Proto-Germanic *galan- (“rage, sing”) or gal (“bile, yellow”) and aa (“body of water, river”) or from Proto-Germanic *alha- (“homestead, farmstead”) prefixed with the collectivising prefix ga-. Compare Gaal, Galder and Maasniel.
