Etymology

From Middle Low German Lǖbēke, from Polabian Liubice (literally lovely) (compare Slovak Ľubica (personal name)), from Proto-Slavic *ľubь (love), from Proto-Indo-European *lewbʰ- (to love). The latter part of the name was altered after the common Low German placename suffix + -beck, from Middle Low German bēke (brook), from Proto-Germanic *bakiz, whence also German Bach.
