Klein Maarslag
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as marisfliete in 944. Derived from klein (“small, lesser”) and a compound of Old Frisian mar (“lake, pool, watercourse”) and fliet (“tidal watercourse, river”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to Dutch Low Saxon slacht (“levee”). The element klein was added to distinguish the settlement from Groot Maarslag.
