Etymology
First attested as cheldunc just before 1233. Compound of an unclear first element and donk (“sandy hill protruding above a marsh”). The first element is potentially related to dialectal kel (“small artificial watercourse used to provide water to a watermill”). So named to distinguish the settlement from Boerdonk and Donk in Beek en Donk.
