From German Low German Göre (17th century). Further origin unknown; possibly from an adjective meaning "small" (Middle High German gōrec, Old High German gōrag), with an original meaning "small helpless creature," ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“short”)[1] A relation with English girl, likewise of uncertain origin, is possible.
