Etymology
From rare or northern Middle High German vluht (genitive vlühte), from Old High German *fluht, from Proto-West Germanic *fluhti (“flight”), here not as a derivative of *fleuhaną (“to flee”), but of *fleuganą (“to fly”), for which otherwise Middle High German vluc. Compare Middle Dutch vlucht, modern Low German Flucht, both with a sense “wing of a bird”. Also cognate with English flight (“flying”).
