Driel

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as drihle in 1196. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps derived from Old Dutch *drila (three-forked junction), in this case referring to an intersection of three rivers. A derivation from a compound of drie (three) and lo (light forest on sandy soil) has also been proposed. Compare Hoenzadriel, Kerkdriel and Velddriel.
