De Normer

Dutch

Etymology

Potentially attested as northanheri in 918-948, attested with certainty as normaer in 1343-1344. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch nort (north-, northern) and meer (lake). It is possible, however, that the toponym is actually a reinterpretation of a compound of Old Dutch north (north-, northern) and heri (sandy ridge).
