From Proto-Celtic *belg-, *bolg- (“to swell (with anger)”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰelǵʰ- (“to bulge, swell”), thus meaning "People who swell (with fury/anger)." Also see Old English belgan and Dutch gebelgd.
