From Ottoman Turkish آذربایجان (Azerbaycan), from Classical Persian آذَربایجان (āzarbāyjān), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾtwrpʾtkʾn), [script needed] (ʾtwrpʾtkn /⁠ādurbādagān⁠/), from the name of Atropates, the Persian nobleman who founded the independent kingdom of Atropatene, from Old Persian 𐎠𐎬𐎼𐎱𐎫 (a-tu-r-p-t /⁠āturpat⁠/, protected by fire).
