Usually thought to derive from Medieval Latin Aleguerium (literally stagnation of seaweed) or Sardinian S'Alighèra, from aliga (seaweed; rubbish) + -era, but either way from Latin alga (seaweed), from Proto-Indo-European *alg-, *alǵ- (to be dirty, slimy).
