Inherited from Proto-Slavic *-tьba. Originally, the suffix was only applied to verbs with historical infinitives in *-iti, but in modern Bulgarian there are exceptions to that (e.g. върши́тба (vǎršítba)). Cognates include Serbo-Croatian -идба.
