From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɣɔːᴬ² (“neck”), from Proto-Tai *ɣoːᴬ (“neck”), from Middle Chinese 喉 (MC huw, “larynx; throat”). Cognate with Thai คอ (kɔɔ), Northern Thai ᨤᩬᩴ, Khün ᨤᩳ, Lao ຄໍ (khǭ), Tai Dam ꪁꪷ, Shan ၶေႃး (kháu), Tai Nüa ᥑᥨᥝᥰ (xöw), Phake ၵေႃ (khō), Zhuang hoz, Saek กฺ๊อ.
