From Old Iranian *wáhišt-ah (compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬵𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬋-𐬀𐬢𐬵𐬎𐬱- (vahištō-aŋhuš-)), from Proto-Iranian *HwáhištHáhuš (literally “best existence”), a compound of *Hwáhištas (“best”, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwásištʰas) + *Háhuš (from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hásuš (“life, existence, being”)).
