First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 이웆〮 (Yale: ìwúc), from pre-Middle Korean *ìpúc. Compare Gyeongsang Middle Korean 이븟 (Yale: ipus), whence modern Jeolla Korean 이붓 (ibut), and Goguryeo *伊伐支 (*iboc), which appears in place name glosses of the Samguk Sagi.
