First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 뷔우〮다〮 (Yale: pwùyGwú-tá).

(bi-, to be empty) + (-u-, causative suffix) + (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).
